Supraspinatus Tendon Structural and Mechanical Properties in a Chronic
نویسنده
چکیده
INTRODUCTION Rotator cuff tears of the shoulder are a common cause of pain and disability and surgical repair of these injuries is plagued with recurrent tear rates ranging from 20-70% [1]. The time from onset of injury to time of surgical repair is one important factor in repair outcome [2]. Animal models have recently been developed to address hypotheses related to rotator cuff tendon to bone injury and repair [3]. However, these studies model an acute injury and repair condition, while the most common clinical presentation is that of chronic or acute on chronic injuries. The healing pathway and potential in these two situations may be fundamentally different. Therefore, the objective of this study is to develop an animal model of chronic rotator cuff tendon tears that would be useful in studying this common clinical problem. In this study, we hypothesize that increased time post-injury will result in increased detrimental changes to supraspinatus tendon organizational and mechanical properties.

Rat supraspinatus tendon responds acutely and chronically to exercise.
The objective of this study was to identify acute responses and chronic adaptations of supraspinatus tendon to noninjurious exercise. We hypothesized that chronic exercise (EX) increases tendon mechanical properties, and a single exercise bout increases matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) activity acutely. Rats were divided into acute or chronic EX or cage activity groups. Animals in acute EX groups...

Introduction: Tendiopathy is defined as an overuse injury that is histologically associated with tenocyte proliferation, collagen fiber degradation, increased non-collagen matrix, fluid accumulation between fibers, capillary proliferation, and calcification. Early diagnosis of tendonopathies Conservative treatments are necessary to prevent severe tendon damage or even rupture. Ultrasound is a n...
متن کاملExercise protocol induces muscle, tendon, and bone adaptations in the rat shoulder.
BACKGROUND a rat model of supraspinatus overuse has suggested mechanisms governing tendon degeneration; however, delineating which changes are pathologic or simply physiologic adaptations to increased loading remains a question. The objective of this study was to develop and characterize a rat exercise model that induces systemic and local shoulder adaptations without mechanical injury to the s...
متن کاملBiceps Mechanical Properties Are Not Altered in the Presence of Asymptomatic Rotator Cuff Tendon Tears
Introduction The long head of the biceps (LHB) tendon has different loading patterns in its intraand extra-articular regions. The intra-articular region is exposed to complex loads including tension, compression, shear, and frictional forces, while the extra-articular portion is subjected primarily to tensional loads. Previous studies have also shown that the intra-articular region has a more d...
متن کاملAssociation Between Years of Competition and Shoulder Function in Collegiate Swimmers.
BACKGROUND Shoulder injuries are common among competitive swimmers, and the progression of shoulder pathology is not well understood. The objective of this study was to assess the extent to which years of competitive swim training were associated with physical properties of the supraspinatus muscle and tendon, shoulder strength, and self-reported assessments of shoulder pain and function. HYP...
